Petrozavodsk is the capital of the Republic of Karelia. This is a young (by Russian standards), cozy green city. Its history dates back to 1703. It is a peer of Saint Petersburg. Petrozavodsk also owes its origin and name to Peter the Great. The Great Northern War of 1700-1721 spurred the establishment of Peter's factories and Petrovskaya Sloboda. Streets, parks, squares of the Karelian capital reflect the events since the foundation of the weapons factory converted into the Onega tractor plant in Soviet times until its today's life – the pulse of the modern economic city, the capital of the Republic of Karelia!

Program:

10.00 am Group meeting, walking or bus tour along the central streets of the city.

  • Exploring the city's squares: Vladimir Lenin's Square, Sergei Kirov's Square (also dubbed as Theatrical or Cathedral).
  • Walking through the places, where the first weapons factories of 1703 once operated. Visiting the place where the Palace of Peter the Great once was.
  • The peaceful Governor's Park embraces visitors with its elegiac quiet, it has ancient cannons and a modern monument to Gavriil Romanovich Derzhavin, the great poet and the first Olonets Governor. Learn about Petrozavodsk aka Äänislinna during its occupation by the Finns back in 1941-1944.
  • Stroll along Onega embankment with the photo-worthy sculptures gifted by European and American twin cities of Petrozavodsk
  • Plunge into a distant past before Olonets Governorate. Explore the religious life of the Northern region. Uncover the amazing and unique Karelian nature.
