Close to Sortavala town and Ruskeala village, there are unique man-made canyons and caves that form a natural monument Ruskeala Marble Breaks. The amazing nature of Karelia and human labor have made this region stunningly beautiful and authentic. One of Ruskeala's quarries (Marble Canyon) was transformed into a real nature museum with endless annual flow of tourists from all over Russia.

Tour program:

09.00 am Departure by a comfortable bus from Petrozavodsk to Ruskeala Mountain Park.
     • Visiting Cross of Sorrow memorial, a monument to the victims of the "winter war" (1939-1940).
     • Exploring Sortavala founded by the Swedes in the 16th century, its past Finnish period and the Russian present.
     •  Visiting the Museum of Kronid Gogolev, a unique woodcarver (paid extra).
On the way to the mountain park: stop at Tohmajoki Falls, a place where The Dawns Here Are Quiet and Trees Grow on the Stones Too movies were filmed.

10.00-11.00 pm Return to Petrozavodsk.

Marble Canyon is a monument of industrial culture (mining) of the late 18th-early 20th century. It was officially included in Russia's list of cultural heritage sites in 1998. This is one-of-a-kind site in Europe with a man-made "cup" in solid marble cut through a system of mines, tunnels and shafts. This place was a source of blocks for the facades of many architectural landmarks of St. Petersburg, including the majestic St. Isaac's Cathedral. Ruskeala marble looking like white nights with greenish splashes resembling Aurora Borealis was produced to decorate various architectural structures. Primorskaya and Ladoga underground vault stations in St. Petersburg were decorated with grayish-green and light-gray marble sourced from Ruskeala.

N. B.! In case of incomplete groups, we can combine tour groups from Petrozavodsk to Sortavala in one bus. If this occurs, the departure from Petrozavodsk takes place at approximately 06.00 am (pickup of tourists from the city districts).
